Chic In Black Monday 7 - Capturing the light

Tuesday, May 31, 2011

This week's Chic in Black is something different. It's something I learned to do with my phone a couple of weeks back. I learned that if I'm against the light in taking shots, the camera can render the picture black and just capture the light.

Simple, right? But it's my entry for the week and I hope you like it. It's my little Missy while playing at a Froyo store.

When it rains, it pours

Tuesday, May 24, 2011

Cliche? Yes I know, but it's true, at least for us and in all different ways.

First, there's the typhoon. I think this is the first typhoon we've felt in Manila and I do hope the reports are wrong that it may escalate to a super typhoon. Although it won't hit our city directly, I still pray for the safety of everyone in the eastern part of our country.

Second, I've been blessed this past week with earning opportunities. I gladly gave most of my earnings to a friend in need and in less than 3 hours, someone paid me for a job I did days ago, then asked to do some more. Karma doesn't get better than that, right?

Third, even hubby seems to be blessed as well. He's been having a tough time at work but a lot of opportunities are now knocking at his door. He's bound to make a tough decision but I believe in him and with constant prayers, I know we are always guided to do the right things and make the right decision.

I just wanted to share this, because I feel I have to. Sometimes when you're really down, you'll even get kicked some more. But if you continue to pray for guidance and support, and for good intentions, it always comes, you just need to listen hard. And even when you're helpless and broke, just continue to share and it comes back ten-fold (or maybe even a thousand-fold).

Happy rainy Tuesday everyone. Prayers for everyone's safety!

Chic In Black Monday 7 - Collected

Monday, May 23, 2011

Welcome to this week's Chic In Black. My entry is something I got to collect for the past 2 weeks. It was Jollibee's promotion of the Coca-Cola Tumblers.

I got to see the tumblers on their facebook account and saw that it will only run until May 22. I couldn't very well eat Jollibee for 3 consecutive days so I had to "schedule" my orders. I did encounter some problems with their delivery (like taking more than an hour than the set 45 minutes) but for the sake of the tumblers, I just let it go, just those 3 times.

Anyway, I really wanted to collect them because I thought they were chic and because I know we could use it. Little Missy loves it by the way. Since it's aluminum, she loves the sound it makes and sometimes uses it as her very own xylophone.

American Idol 2011 Top 2 - Spoiler alert!

Saturday, May 21, 2011

If you don't want to know the results before you've watched the show, DO NOT READ!

I'm not an avid fan of American Idol. I just watch the show until they reach the top 10 or so then just wait for reruns or go search online on who got eliminated. By the time it only has 10 contestants left, I've usually made up my mind on my fave 3.

Why am I blogging about it now? Because this year, Haley intrigued me. She was at the bottom 3 for a number of times, but always managed to escape eliminations and who would've thought that she'd be in the top 3. I'm not a fan of Haley, only because I like James and Scotty more. But if those 2 boys didn't show such character and personality, I probably would've rooted for Casey and Lauren (yes in that particular order).

So who went home today? Yeah, I guess you could conclude that it the wasn't the one I liked, or the one that I would've rooted for. Yes, Haley got booted off. The fans, family and friends of Lauren and Scotty finally had enough buying power to have her at the bottom and this time, eliminated for good.

One thing is for sure, though I'm not a Haley fan, I'm sure she'll be getting a lot of offers. She managed to capture the hearts (and attention) of a lot of people through her comebacks from elimination. With her sultry voice and carefree attitude on stage, I'm sure we'll see more of her soon. Thank you for Haley for showing a lot of courage, I may not have been a fan but I admire your courage and strength, for hanging in there 'til the last moment.

To Scotty and Lauren, good luck!

Home sweet home... soon.

It has been a long time since hubby and I talked about our home. Not this house we're living at now, but the home we're planning to build soon, on our own lot. We've had the design for years but we never really got to part to start on it.

I remember that day we got the blueprints. We were so giddy with excitement that as soon as we left the Architect's and Engineer's office, we window shopped for everything we were to use in the house. We chose our dream "things" - bathtub, sofas, dining sets, kitchen counters and tops, everything.

We were newly married then and we had a discussion about everything except for the leather sofa. We both wanted at least one sleek, black, 3-seater leather sofa in the living or reception area. We originally both wanted a corner unit leather sofa but then decided on a single sofa and a lazy boy right beside it. The picture below is basically what we had in mind. (Image from direct.tesco.com)

black leather sofa
I think that idea of the leather basically started us setting themes for the different areas in our soon-to-be home. The living room would be sleek in leather, the kitchen would be stark in steel, and the family room to be well... kid-friendly with lots of bean bags and other little stuff for children to enjoy. Other areas of the house had themes too but we left them open for discussion until the time that we actually build the house already.

Having a child now definitely changes my perspective in things. The themes may still be somewhat the same but our dream "things" may change a bit, except the leather sofa. That we still have to have.

Pink Friday 6 - Butterfly

Friday, May 20, 2011

My entry for today's Pink Friday was the face paint I decided to have done last Easter. It was my second time to have some face paint done and the only reason I did it was because my little Missy was skeptical about it. She thought it was dirty (which is actually true) and kept saying "Eeew". I wanted her to know that it's okay to be dirty (but pretty) once in a while.

Happy Friday and hope you and your family enjoy the weekend!

Lessening the Phobia

Thursday, May 19, 2011

Thanks to a different kind of doctor (Developmental Pedia in Not a Doctor), little Missy is not as afraid of them anymore. She associated getting her shots with doctors and nurses in scrubs since we’ve been doing this for months for her vaccinations. I wouldn’t blame her because every time she’d see her regular pedia, she’d get a shot. We didn’t have any visits for plain consultations because she doesn’t get sick much.

Before our Dev’t. Pedia visit, I was actually thinking to buy scrubs online. I thought that if she gets used to the idea of seeing me wear scrubs at home, maybe I can lessen the phobia every time she sees a nurse in scrub at the clinic because then she knows she will soon be ushered to her doctor’s office for a shot.

Maybe even those branded tops that look like scrubs but have fancy designs would work too. That way, I can also use them when going out and then she’d think that they’re for casual wear and that seeing them doesn’t mean we will automatically go to her doctor for a shot.

Not a doctor

Wednesday, May 18, 2011

This was what my 2-year old Little Missy said after our first consultation with her Development Pediatrician at the Asian Hospital. Let me give you a brief background.

Contrary to why most parents seek the expertise of a Dev't. Pedia, we weren't worried about her having ADHD, or ADD, or anything like that. We've just been told by a lot of people to have her assessed because she seemed advanced even before she turned 1. Even her regular pedia is amazed at her development although he didn't push for an assessment, until recently.

I am with my little girl 24/7 so maybe that's why I don't see her as other people do. I think all she does is pretty normal and regular because I do not compare other kids to her. I hated that when I was little so why do it to her and to other children who may be equally blessed with other talents.

Anyway, hubby and I are considering enrolling her in a school but didn't know which type of school. This was where it all started. Most people said she's too advanced for the regular nursery or even kinder level. If only she could write uniformly between blue-to-blue lines, she could even pass for the Preparatory level. Some people say to just enroll her in a toddler school rich in physical and social activities. Because sending her to the right school is a big issue for us, that's when we finally decided to consult with a Dev't. Pedia.

I told myself I'll take notes, record, and photograph what I can but it seems I forgot all those because the discussion started with a detailed background of myself and my hubby. We were asked about our own family backgrounds and characteristics of "noteable" family members. Then I was asked in detail about my journey to pregnancy, including my miscarriage, pre-pregnancy activities and medications if any, pre-natal activities and medications, and what medications and activities little Missy is engaged in now that she's 2 and 7 months old.

After taking all those down, she started to "play" with her. Honestly, I don't think I remember everything that she did to assess her but at the end it left my little girl a little tired. She started getting restless, but I don't blame her, they were at it for an hour and a half.

The doctor said that she had to go on and on because little Missy could still answer her questions so she had to prod until she could gauge the level. I think though that she also felt how restless the little girl was so she also decided to end it. She just advised us to come back in a couple of months for another assessment.

When we got the results, hubby and I were surprised at how she did. The doctor called her developmentally advanced. Her reading skills were at Grade 2 level, and this was her main strength together with her communication skills.

Now knowing this, she gave us her advice on how to cope with her, how I should be able to support her and what type of school she recommends. Actually, we're still waiting for an email from her for a list of schools fit for little Missy in our area.

For now, I'll do my best to support her interests, guide her strengths and develop ummm... everything else. I made a promise to myself that I'll let her keep her childhood. Even though she's accomplished a lot for her age, I will not, nor will I let anyone, dictate what she has to do. I will give her the childhood that she deserves regardless if it may seem that she's too mature for it. If she says it's too shallow for her, then we move a step further, but not until she herself is ready for it.

Decorating with etageres

Tuesday, May 17, 2011

We are starting to plan for our house next year, yay! The lot is almost paid for and I’m thinking it’s just about time too so that our little Missy can start cherishing her most memorable moments from our home, not in a rented place.

For the design and all, Daddy gets to think about that. I have no talent in maximizing spaces or imagining planes and axes so that I’ll leave up to him. My share in all this is the type of accents, furnitures and fixtures.

Learning from our recent place, one thing I will never have too much of are bathroom etageres. Of course this is keeping in mind that we have quite a spacious bathroom. Having etageres in the bathroom can give it a more “homey” feel. I’m thinking of showing off some figurines (from birthday/wedding souvenirs), fresh flowers and scented candles in the bathroom. Why? The bathroom is one place in the house that we spend most of our time in so I want to make it more inviting and relaxing.

Luckily I found a great Etagere store online and maybe I buy some pieces from them when the house is almost complete. For now, I’m showing off their great pieces to Daddy so he gets a feel of the theme I want for our humble abode.

Are you a fan of etageres too? Don't you think they add a bit more character to a home?

Chic In Black Monday 6 - Missing you

I just realized Monday is the busiest day of the week for me just because I try to make up with the chores from the past weekend. So from now on, I'll have to keep in mind to make a post for Chic In Black before the weekend so it always comes out on time. My apologies to those who waited.

Anyway, my entry today is a result of a chat session with a friend. We were discussing blogging and the subject of owning a camera came up. Although we have a Nikon, sometimes I feel it best to have a point-and-shoot camera still, I actually miss my almost 10-yr old Kodak. A dslr is so heavy that my arms really hurt after a couple of hours use. Also, if you're in such a hurry and don't know how to settings yet, you miss a lot of good shots because you feel you try to adjust the settings because they don't come out great. That one time that I covered a family affair, my hands and arms hurt and my neck hurt as well because I'd just let it hang when I was tired. That was when I wished I still had my trusty, old P&S.

Should I get enough budget to buy my P&S, I'm opting for this.

Hubby and I really like this because of it's great reviews. When one of hubby's office mate asked for his advice on what to buy, he told her to buy this and I was looking at her shots on FB and they're shot like an dslr! I'm so impressed and I hope I can save enough for it. But, I still want to enroll in a basic photography class to learn more on how to get the best of our dslr. I still want to use that for scenic shots, for those that command concentration. But if I want to capture little Missy's best (which is 24/7), a trusy new P&S is needed, don't you think so?

Hope you all have a great week ahead!

Blogger is back

Saturday, May 14, 2011

So a lot of bloggers knew that Blogger was down for 1 or 2 days. Being a newbie, I was scared of what might happen because I don't regularly back up my blog. Lesson learned, now I know I'll back it up every week!

Anyway, as soon as I read that people can login to their accounts again, I too tried and lo and behold, it worked. I got in and found all my posts intact, whew! The only thing I had a problem with was the layout. The 2 sidebars on the right weren't functioning. They all occupied 1 column.

I tried to fix them manually, but whether I was moving or adding widgets, nothing worked. They layout was still broken. I posted a one line rant about it in an FB group but I figured I would just sleep on it for one night and try to manually fix them again the next day, even if it meant the need to change the layout.

As soon as I woke up, I did all my chores and went online. I'm so happy that the layout has been restored, yahooo! Now I'm backing up my blog and my template, and contemplate if it's time to move to wordpress.

What do you think?

First "Spring Cleaning Day" in the Philippines

Tuesday, May 10, 2011

Press Release:

The Philippines Holds First “Spring Cleaning Day”

Five cities in Metro Manila will demonstrate how the country can save lives, time, and money, as they join the first-ever “Philippine Spring Cleaning Day (PSCD).”

In its goal to push for cleaning and sanitation as one of the most effective ways to lower the country's disease burden, representatives from the Department of Health (DoH), UP-National Institutes of Health (UP-NIH), Pediatric Infectious Disease Society of the Philippines (PIDSP), Reckitt Benckiser, Lysol, and several local government units are calling for better sanitation through the institution of the first Philippine Spring Cleaning Day.

On May 11, there will be a simultaneous cleanup across five cities, namely Makati, Mandaluyong, Pasig, Manila, and Pasay.

“We hope to educate as well as to encourage the habit of cleaning and disinfecting of Filipino homes through this annual event,” says Marichu Gozun, Senior Brand Manager of Lysol.

According to a joint study commissioned by the World Health Organization (WHO) and United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), at least 20 million Filipinos are exposed to poor sanitation. This means that one-fourth of the Philippine population has poor hygiene practices, do not have the benefit of an accessible and safe toilet, or do not dispose of human waste properly. The fact that less than half of Filipinos wash their hands after using the bathroom is a very telling statistic that speaks of the country's unfortunate attitudes towards cleaning and sanitation.

Being one with the PSCD's advocacy to educate Filipinos about the significance of cleaning and disinfecting, DoH Environmental Health Chief Dr. Rodolfo Albornoz says that families should be mindful of the harmful effects of poor sanitation not only on their health but also on other aspects of their lives.

For instance, poor sanitation affects productivity. “The rhinovirus–the virus responsible for approximately 50 percent of the cases of flu and the common cold in both adults and children–causes Filipinos to lose an average of eight school or work days a year,” shares Dr. Albornoz. Consequently, poor sanitation also results in increased economic losses.

The campaign's concentration on household cleaning is highly significant because proponents of the PSCD believe that even the home, which is supposed to be every family's place of refuge, can be unsafe. They note that bacteria dwell on everyday things in the home that are taken for granted. “What people do not know is that they are more likely to get sick from germs and viruses in their own homes than in any other place,” says PIDSP President Dr. Lester Deniega.

UP-NIH Executive Director Dr. Lulu Bravo agrees. “We invite everyone to take part in this initiative and join the fight against diseases,” ends Dr. Bravo.

Indeed, intensified cleaning and disinfection will go a long way towards helping the country save time and money, reduce economic costs, and increase productivity as well as people’s overall health and productivity.

Be part of the first public and private initiative for cleaning and sanitation, and join the Department of Health, Lysol and partner organizations as they celebrate Philippine Spring Cleaning Day on May 11. Chic In Black Monday 5 - I wish

First off, I'm sorry I'm posting this about day and a half late. I had to look after my 2y/o who we took to the ER last Sunday (will post another story about it in a bit). Since then she'd been extra clingy and didn't want me to leave her side. I had to monitor her temperature too because though hubby and I felt she was hot, she was only running a temp of 36.4C to 36.8C most of the time so I couldn't give her the paracetamol.

Anyway, I will be extending CIB until Friday for more Chic participants. My entry for this week is on top of my wish list. It's an iPad2. I know it will take lots of time before I can buy one but in the deepest bottom of my heart I know I WILL get one, no matter what. Why? My little girl says my phone is hers. Almost all the apps are hers. When her daddy calls, she automatically hits Decline because she's in the middle of her game (then Daddy will call our landline). When someone sends an SMS, she automatically hits Close (which is better than hitting view, at least I still get a notification).

So for her, I'm wishing for an iPad, in black of course, and the keyboard that comes with it in this picture. Having a keyboard with it, and hubby's mobile internet means I can blog too most of the time (if little Missy's not using it, of course).

My Tots Exactly CIB Monday

Isn't it just Chic? I've never really been a fan of Apple until hubby was contacted by Globe for his eligibility for the iPhone4 as his reward. Then hubby bought a Macbook Pro for their company for mobile and web development. I got a chance to use it and liked its simplicity. I haven't touched an iPad yet but I know my little Missy will love it.

Some people say it's not right for us parents to indulge our children with such "material" things. I don't leave her at it all day. I only like it for her because she's learned so much. She's read more books that I have (yes, read not listened). She's now learning addition and subtraction. She learning to how to play strategic games even if it's just through a simple maze. I spend 24 hours with her, every day, so I still give her the emotional, psychological and whatever it is critics say parents should give their children. :D

Hope you all have a great week ahead!

Chic in Black Monday 4

Monday, May 2, 2011

Pardon me for posting late but there were so much to do since the weekend.

Anyway, my entry today for Chic In Black doesn't have anything to do with fashion at all. I say it's Chic because I really find it awesome, cool and fun. This was taken to our trip at the Manila Ocean Park for Daddy's birthday(post about it to follow soon).

Watching the sea lions up close was really fun. They're one of the most interesting and CHIC animals that I've ever come across with. I hope you enjoy my entry and have fun in this blog hop.

Have a great week ahead! Happy 1st May Monday!
