My Sister and Hospitals

My sister hates hospitals. Let's just say that she's never had a nice experience with hospitals all her life. I know you only go to hospitals when you're sick and of course it will never be a nice experience, and that's not what I meant. What I meant was that every time she goes to the ER, it takes them more than 2 hours before the initial check-up.

I've tried explaining to her that it's because they prioritize based on the sense of urgency. Of course the more life-threatening symptoms would always be looked at first. I know sometimes it's unreasonable to wait 2 hours, especially if 4 rounds of patients have been checked before you, but if that's the way it is, then that's the way it always will be. I just usually nag them after 2 hours to have tests done already because if they did the first hour, the results would be in by the 2nd hour.

Yesterday afternoon she complained of severe pain in her right abdominal area that extended to her back. She usually tolerates pain well but this one she couldn't take anymore. My other sister called me to let me know so that I can decide on the matter since my mom was out. I called my cousin and asked a favor to drive my sister to the ER. While they were preparing, my other sister and her husband rode the motorcycle to look for my mom. They found her after a couple of minutes, she was walking on her way home from a Church meeting.

My mom and sister got to the hospital around 7:15pm. At 7:30 they had her in a private ER Room (wow, just 15 minutes in the Triage!!) and had already scheduled for CT scans. By 8:00pm she was wheeled in the CT Scan/X-Ray area and was done in minutes, the staff also processed her papers for confinement. By 9pm her results were out and at 9:30pm she was in her private room.

I think with this experience my sister will actually see hospitals in a new light. She will understand why people had to wait 2 hours... because of cases like hers last night. The nurses and doctors checked her right away because she was literally writhing in pain. They had to rule out appendicitis and kidney/gall stones.

As of this writing, her scans came out negative. Her urinalysis had traces of stone but nothing conclusive. She is still under observation though because another theory was that her sugar was too high (she's a Diabetic) and the formation of acids in her digestive track was just too strong yesterday (I hope I explained or termed that correctly).

We're going to visit her in a couple of hours. They already allowed her to eat, though to start she will be on a liquid diet. At least she won't be all mad and crazy of hunger when we get there.

My Sister and Hospitals... a whole new light. I hope she'll be fine and released soon. And, I hope she does follow a strict diet and be more active this time, she's majorly obese.

Happy Thanksgiving to all

I know the year isn't over yet, and even if I'm not in the USA I'd like to share what I'm thankful for.

1. My hubby - For working so hard just to give us the life he thinks we deserve. I don't ask for a lot but he has high expectations. He believes that "When you shoot for the moon and end up short, you'll end up among the stars." I thank him for providing our needs and for always sticking up for us.
2. My little Missy - For sharing her eyes. Through her eyes, I learned to view the world in a whole new perspective. Also, for teaching me how to live, how to laugh, and how not to take things for granted.
3. For being a stay-at-home. I have never regretted giving up my career to take care of my little girl. With this new lifestyle, I have learned how it is behind the scenes and be grateful for everything my mother did for us. She was a stay-at-home mom too. My hope now is that I become or at least be able to accomplish half of what she has done for our family.
4. My mother, siblings, grandmother and godmother - For being with me every step of the way. From pregnancy to now, they are always "on-call" for anything I might need. I can always rely on them for everything, looking after little Missy when I have to go to the hospital, repairing furniture and appliances, cleaning house when my helper left... everything!
5. The Blogosphere - I only started blogging this March but I am thankful for everything I have accomplished. I have managed to earn a little extra for our needs and the blessing keep on coming. I also thank everyone I have met up with through blogging for teaching me new things. Be it technical (about html or coding), to writing or money making techniques, I am grateful for the knowledge, time, and patience you have shared with me.
6. For my online friends (HML, OCB, BC). Being in different countries certainly didn't stop us from sharing stories and tips. Thank you for sharing your life with us and for making ours extra special. Thank you for the surprise gifts and most especially, your support during the times we needed it. You will forever be my extended family from afar :)
7. Lastly, and most importantly, to God Almighty, for making all this possible.

My first shot at Video Calling

I have been corresponding with some of my Mom and my Grandmother's friends in the USA. The internet makes it easier for both parties since everything is almost at a click of a button. Also, my Grandmother (lola) now has a hard time writing snail mail to her friends and "adopted" children. I guess it's brought about my rheumatism or arthritis.

Her friends told me to just ask what she wants to say and in turn, I type and email it to them. When they respond back, I just print it out and let my Grandmother read it. Convenient, right? Nope, it's not working for them. Whenever I ask my Grandmother what she wants to say in reply to their emails, she couldn't think of any. She says it's just not the same as writing.

A couple of months back, her friends requested that we do a video call. They wanted to see my Grandmother. I finally got a chance to set it up yesterday. Hubby brought his lappy with us, and the Globe Tattoo HSDPA Internet USB.

It didn't work. Skype would only connect for a maximum of a minute and a half. Yahoo was even worse. Plus, this was a one way video call. We forgot to bring our camera. I can't even imagine how worse it would get if both sides were streaming videos.

So as a last resort, because they really wanted to see my Grandmother, we went to my Grandmother's neighbor. She also had children overseas and connect with them through video conferencing. They only used Yahoo Messenger, which was fine, but when they had it set up, I noticed that they were using a prepaid dial up card.

Another problem. First it was too costly for her neighbor since it's prepaid. Second, for sure there would be a minimum of 1-minute lag because the connection speed was just about 30k. Third, with umm... senior citizens on both ends, it was extra difficult to manage the delay. They kept repeating their questions and statements over and over.

They did manage to see my Grandmother for maybe 1 minute when they turned off their streaming. But as for making conversation, it was impossible. We just set up another schedule next week. Hubby would pick up my Grandmother and use our connection here in the house. Hubby uses Skype often for his meetings and I don't see much delay so I hope they finally get to "talk" and "see" each other.

I didn't think it would be that hard. But at least I learned a lot from this experience. My first shot at video calling may have been a failure, but it was a fun experience. It also made me realize how we've come a long way. How everything changes in an instant. From dial up, to cabled internet, to wifi, to HSDPA. I wonder what technology my daughter will be using 10 years from now?

One step at a time

These were pictures taken last weekend. I want to share one of my indescribable feelings as a Mommy. Somehow, seeing these pictures again made me realize that she has indeed grown up. She is getting to be independent and as a parent, I need to let her go her own way sometimes.

I find it comforting yet heartbreaking. She is slowly learning the ropes of life, I know. But as a mother, it is hard to just let go.

What a better way to end the day though. At the end of the rainbow, I know something good will come out of all this. Looking forward to a long future with my not-so-little Missy. I just hope she takes it one step at a time.

I saw Mommy thanking Santa Claus Part 2

Look who handed us our prize! (What we won? Please read "I won!")

I do have pics of my own but I wanted to wait for Rustan's to publish the photos first, after all this made possible because of them (Rustan's Wishlist Contest). I'll just post my photos later on.

I thought it was a regular photo op. A representative handing us our prize, you know, the usual stuff. We were surprised when we said we had to go a certain "area". Seeing Santa there with all the Christmas decors certainly made us feel that this was truly a wonderful Christmas gift.

Even my little girl was surprised that Santa was handing her the gift, this early! I felt so content and happy when she wanted me to give her a little smack.





After a little convo with Santa, and him singing Frosty the Snowman with us, we finally had a real, formal photo taken.



This is truly a memorable experience for us. One day my little girl can really say that she saw Mommy thanking Santa Claus.

We got our prize from the Rustan's Wishlist Promo. What we didn't expect was Santa Claus. Santa handed us our gift and we had our photo op with him. While they were clicking away, my little Missy was trying to correct me while singing Frosty the Snowman. Santa had a grand time hearing her correct me.. and he sang with us too :)

We're picking up our prize!

Bubbles over Megamind

We were supposed to watch Megamind last Saturday. But before we went it, we asked around about how the movie was and we were told it was rated PG for language and some violence/action I think (not sure anymore today). Since litte Missy is in her mimicking stage, we decided to skip it.

We decided to go to Makati and had lunch at Big Buddha (service was worse than poor, I'll blog about it in My Tummy Calls sometime this week). After our late lunch, we decided to take little Missy to Greenhills to watch the animated show.

When we got to Greenhills, we lost hope. First, all the gasoline stations were out of Gas (V-Power and Premium). Second, traffic was horrible! Third, if traffic was that bad, I expect foot traffic was even worse. We decided to go home BUT dropped by Krispy Kreme at Boni High for some late snack.

The next day, we again went to Boni High to meet with our friends. She forgot about missing the movie altogether because she saw bubbles! She ran and ran trying to catch them. Pictures to be uploaded later in another post. They're up for watermarking.

Saturday plan

This is a scheduled post.

We're planning to watch Megamind today. If they allow little Missy inside, this will be another milestone, her first time to watch in a cinema. Since it's a 3D movie too, Daddy and I will also have 2 momentous events... our first time to watch a 3D movie and our first time to watch a movie as a family.

I sure hope this pushes through. Daddy has a scheduled meeting right after lunch so I am praying we still have time for at least the second to the last full show (around 8pm). If we do get to watch it, I'll blog about our experience on Monday.

Rustan's Wishlist - I won!

I won! I really won!

There have been a lot of contests on Facebook that I've joined. In the (maybe) 80 that I joined, I won 4 of them. The first was for a gift certificate for a Spanish restaurant. The second was a beauty gift pack that I forgot to claim. The third was for my entry in the Anti-Dengue war (I love this mosquito repellant patch). This last one, I just got notice today. Starbucks charged Saturday... and a doughnut.

We get to sleep-in late on Saturdays, but this Saturday, something was just nudging me to stand up and start my day.

I was so excited for the day because we were meeting up with Tita Tin and Tito Joel. They were having their pre-nup pictures taken at Fernbrook and agreed to meet us afterward. I was to get the cloths for my little Missy's first flower girl dress! I've seen the design online and it's so simple and pretty.

We met at Starbucks El Molito and I got my first glimpse of the planner and the holiday treats. I was curious about the Christmas Holiday Wrap after reading Mommy Ro of Animetric World's blog post about all the yummy goodies (Read here, Starbucks Cheer Party) so I tried one. After my first bite however, little Missy took over. She ate half of it. I let her keep eating it because I know it's healthy for her, then whatever she left, hubby and I just shared. I hope I can still go to a Cheer Party though, I'd love to have one of those again AND try out the other cakes, pastries and bread.

After our meeting, we headed off to another Starbucks at Boni since hubby had to meet with some friends. I knew it would take some time so Little Missy and I went around. For the long part, we just played at Hobbes and Landes. I especially liked that there was a Robotics Workshop at that time. I love seeing children with their parents just bonding and doing something they love. I am not sure if it were Lego blocks that they were using, but they were making catapults out of it. This makes me want to get preggo and have son soon! hehe

We then played with the green tubes again but this time she was comfortable enough for me to leave her alone on the other end. We were talking back and forth through the tubes for a good minute or two before she looked for me. When she saw I was just on the other end, she went back and we started playing again.

For the other parts, we watched a lot of dogs, skateboarders and kids in their scooters. But to end the perfect day, she got a free pink mini doughnut from Krispy Kreme, a hat and a balloon. What more can a little girl ask for?

Hotdogs and Onions, with Ketchup on the side please - The story.

My Tummy Calls features one of my all-time favorite dishes involving the juicy hotdog, the crisp round onions and a merry splash of ketchup (read here). Why is this dish on of my favorites? Here's the story...

When we were growing up, I was 11 I think and my sisters were 9 and 6, we had a Friday habit. My father (RIP) would pick us up from school early and take us to the Villamor Base Driving Range in Magallanes. A driver would pick my mom and my youngest sister from the house since her school schedule was only during the first half of the day.

A brief background, my father and most of his family members, (his father and some of his brothers) all played golf. My father was even the first (not really sure now) Team Captain of his University's Golf Team. It wasn't really a question that we were bound to learn it some day.

Anywho, I and my younger sister were coached by golf professionals. We would just let our youngest sister hit balls from time to time when we needed a rest, or when we'd snack on something. During those times, I personally felt that we were being forced to learn the sport. I knew that wasn't my father's intention. I just felt that since we had to do it every Friday, then it's somehow being forceful. The only thing I looked forward to during those days was this hotdog dish.

Maybe it's because eating it would mean a semi-long break (since we eat it with rice), plus the short rest afterwards. Maybe it was just because I loved hotdogs then. Maybe it was the ketchup. I honestly can't remember but I'm thankful for it.

Because we loved it so much, my mom imitated the dish. I don't think there's any difference between my mom's and the one from the Driving Range. I love my mom for discovering it. I love her for sharing it with me, now that my little girl seems to have a knack for hotdogs too, maybe she's in the hotdog stage already?

So why do I love this dish? Because my mom tried to learn it because we loved it. Because once upon a time in my childhood it was a big thing for me to look forward to. Lastly, because it reminds me of my father.

I may not have liked our Friday habit during that stage in my life, but I'm thankful he forced, err... encouraged us to learn it. I won a couple of tournaments when I was in my teens. I met a lot of people from different walks of life. I was able to use it at work if "recreation" was needed with clients and most importantly, I was able to learn something HE loved.

So.. without further ado... our dish for the day, Hotdogs and Onions, with Ketchup on the side please. Oh, ketchup wasn't really on the side, so it should be called Hotdogs and Onions with Ketchup "on it".

Guidelines:

• Giveaway is ideally for residents of the Philippines, but if you are currently not residing here, you can still join as long as you have a relative who can accept the item/s in the Philippines.
• Winners will be announced within 1 week after contest deadline.
• Winners will be chosen either through Random.org or if the comments section messes up, manual drawing of stubs by my little girl with video.
