Lessening the Phobia

Thanks to a different kind of doctor (Developmental Pedia in Not a Doctor), little Missy is not as afraid of them anymore. She associated getting her shots with doctors and nurses in scrubs since we’ve been doing this for months for her vaccinations. I wouldn’t blame her because every time she’d see her regular pedia, she’d get a shot. We didn’t have any visits for plain consultations because she doesn’t get sick much.

Before our Dev’t. Pedia visit, I was actually thinking to buy scrubs online. I thought that if she gets used to the idea of seeing me wear scrubs at home, maybe I can lessen the phobia every time she sees a nurse in scrub at the clinic because then she knows she will soon be ushered to her doctor’s office for a shot.

Maybe even those branded tops that look like scrubs but have fancy designs would work too. That way, I can also use them when going out and then she’d think that they’re for casual wear and that seeing them doesn’t mean we will automatically go to her doctor for a shot.

Decorating with etageres

We are starting to plan for our house next year, yay! The lot is almost paid for and I’m thinking it’s just about time too so that our little Missy can start cherishing her most memorable moments from our home, not in a rented place.

For the design and all, Daddy gets to think about that. I have no talent in maximizing spaces or imagining planes and axes so that I’ll leave up to him. My share in all this is the type of accents, furnitures and fixtures.

Learning from our recent place, one thing I will never have too much of are bathroom etageres. Of course this is keeping in mind that we have quite a spacious bathroom. Having etageres in the bathroom can give it a more “homey” feel. I’m thinking of showing off some figurines (from birthday/wedding souvenirs), fresh flowers and scented candles in the bathroom. Why? The bathroom is one place in the house that we spend most of our time in so I want to make it more inviting and relaxing.

Luckily I found a great Etagere store online and maybe I buy some pieces from them when the house is almost complete. For now, I’m showing off their great pieces to Daddy so he gets a feel of the theme I want for our humble abode.

Happy Birthday Yoya Ina

Happy, happy birthday to my Aunt (and Godmother for both my Christening and Wedding) Viña!! Little Missy calls her Yoya Ina or Ta Vin so please pardon the title.

Thank you so much for sending over some of the yummy spaghetti (and the warning regarding the quick-cook noodles), the Pizza slices, Little Missy's mango that I forgot to pick up from your house, and the pink and green stik-o.

Aside from the food, thank you for being our second mom. Walang pinsan at kapatid ko na di nagdaan sa kamay mo nang nagkasakit. Maraming, maraming salamat sa iyong pag-aruga. Mahal na mahal ka namin!

International Women's Day 2011 and my 1st Blogaversary

First, thank you Google for commemorating this day with all of us women. As I clicked on the logo, it actually took me to a special page where we can join different events for the day instead of resulting to search pages. I joined te International Women's Day Parade - Stronger Women for Stronger Nations which was supposed to be a walk in one of the cities nearby but I never did leave the house. I virtually joined the event which was really, really cool.


Next, I am honored to have been in the presence of Sr. Mary John Mananzan when I was still in High School (she became President 4 years after I graduated HS). She has inspired a lot of women in our country and I hope that more women realize that we are strong, that we have rights, that we are smart and that we should be loved. Sr. Mary John Mananzan was cited by the New York-based Women Deliver to mark the 100th International Women's Day.

Lastly, today also marks my first blogaversary. My very first post, My Blog-breaker was posted on March 8th, 2010 at 3:51pm. I am happy to say that in a year of blogging I have learned a lot. I have been (and still am being) educated about the workarounds in this internet-based world. Through blogging, I have also earned somehow from the confines of my home while caring for my little Missy 24/7. Thank you everyone who shared this 1-year journey with me. Thank you to my super husband who supported me all the way and never failed to let me know that I am appreciated. Thank you to all my mommy friends from all over the world (OCB, HML, BC, PMB/PMC).

I am proud to be a woman. I am proud to be a wife and a mom. I am proud to be your friend. I hope you'll journey with me for many, many more years to come.

I'm thankful for...

I think I wrote a post for what I'm thankful for last November during Thanksgiving. I'd rather not copy that post but maybe add more in to it.

I am thankful for:

1. My husband for being my friend. Thank you for sharing your big dreams with me. It inspires us more to work harder for our little princess. Thank you for loving me unconditionally, no ifs. Most of all, thank you for never failing to make me special no matter what little thing I did. Even folding clothes seem to make me feel special because you say I do it perfectly, just the right size, not too wide nor too narrow. THANK YOU.
2. My little Missy, God's perfect little gift. Having you in my life seems that I must have done something good with my life before you were born. God wouldn't have given me a baby as perfect and special as you if I was such a bad person. Thank you for never failing to surprise me. I'm actually afraid your vocabulary has far exceeded mine. Thank you for understanding me and my moods. At 2, you know just by looking at me what my mood is, and you always try to make me smile. Thank you for sharing your eyes. I see things now in a whole new perspective. Thank you for giving me love unconditionally. Thank you making my life have meaning.
3. My mother, siblings and in-laws for never failing to help and support me. 2010 has been problematic when it comes to the household but you were always willing to help. You sacrifice almost anything when I need you, sometimes even when I just want you around. Thanks for loving me. Thanks for loving my family.
4. My friends, especially Nicquee for introducing me to blogging. I am very thankful I learned about blogging last year. It has helped me release a lot of my emotions and thoughts without being judged by anyone. Plus, I learned to earn from it, even just a litte from the comfort of my home at my most convenient time. This means a lot because I am not sacrificing the time I spend with my little Missy. Thanks too to my dearest online friends, the original to current HML, BC Moms and Dads especially Wheng, Chi, Kim, Jon and Levie. Thanks to Glenda of Jazz Shoppe for everything I learned as was able to share.

Happy Birthday to my not-so-little Bro!

My brother turned 17 yesterday. Tomorrow, January 6th, he would have spent 16 years with us exactly.

Yes, he's a year late. It's because he's special, he's adopted. His mother wasn't ready to care for him at 17 when she gave birth to him 17 years ago. We always thought somehow she'd find her way back to him but she never did. There were a lot of stories of her trying to find him, but for me, they're all stories.

My mother is still staying in the same house where they talked about giving him up. My mother still has the same circle of friends that she can ask on how to get in touch with us. For me, his birth mother just gave up.

Ironic that my brother is now the same age as when his mother gave birth to him. But somehow, my brother is centuries ahead of his time in terms of maturity. We never hid the fact that he's adopted, we didn't even change his name. All these challenges and experiences seems to have made him so strong and mature, but love-wise, ahhh... that's another matter. In that field, he's just the regular 17 year old.

Thank you Bro for the wonderful 16 years you've shared with us. Thank you for loving us. Thank you for accepting us. Always remember that we love you so much, no matter what.

My Sister and Hospitals

My sister hates hospitals. Let's just say that she's never had a nice experience with hospitals all her life. I know you only go to hospitals when you're sick and of course it will never be a nice experience, and that's not what I meant. What I meant was that every time she goes to the ER, it takes them more than 2 hours before the initial check-up.

I've tried explaining to her that it's because they prioritize based on the sense of urgency. Of course the more life-threatening symptoms would always be looked at first. I know sometimes it's unreasonable to wait 2 hours, especially if 4 rounds of patients have been checked before you, but if that's the way it is, then that's the way it always will be. I just usually nag them after 2 hours to have tests done already because if they did the first hour, the results would be in by the 2nd hour.

Yesterday afternoon she complained of severe pain in her right abdominal area that extended to her back. She usually tolerates pain well but this one she couldn't take anymore. My other sister called me to let me know so that I can decide on the matter since my mom was out. I called my cousin and asked a favor to drive my sister to the ER. While they were preparing, my other sister and her husband rode the motorcycle to look for my mom. They found her after a couple of minutes, she was walking on her way home from a Church meeting.

My mom and sister got to the hospital around 7:15pm. At 7:30 they had her in a private ER Room (wow, just 15 minutes in the Triage!!) and had already scheduled for CT scans. By 8:00pm she was wheeled in the CT Scan/X-Ray area and was done in minutes, the staff also processed her papers for confinement. By 9pm her results were out and at 9:30pm she was in her private room.

I think with this experience my sister will actually see hospitals in a new light. She will understand why people had to wait 2 hours... because of cases like hers last night. The nurses and doctors checked her right away because she was literally writhing in pain. They had to rule out appendicitis and kidney/gall stones.

As of this writing, her scans came out negative. Her urinalysis had traces of stone but nothing conclusive. She is still under observation though because another theory was that her sugar was too high (she's a Diabetic) and the formation of acids in her digestive track was just too strong yesterday (I hope I explained or termed that correctly).

We're going to visit her in a couple of hours. They already allowed her to eat, though to start she will be on a liquid diet. At least she won't be all mad and crazy of hunger when we get there.

My Sister and Hospitals... a whole new light. I hope she'll be fine and released soon. And, I hope she does follow a strict diet and be more active this time, she's majorly obese.

Overcoming a ladybug

Little Missy didn't know if she'd be happy or scared. The chocolate was a ladybug chocolate.

She played with it until the next day (thankfully it didn't melt) because she insisted it was a toy bug. She didn't believe it was chocolate until I actually took a bite.

Monday, our family Holiday.

Since it's a holiday, Daddy decided to have another out-of-house bonding time. This time, we went to Boni High Street (BHS) and spent some time at Starbucks (yes! another mint tea). Then we decided to have some doughnuts at Krispy Kreme so while walking to the other side, Little Missy got to stroll big-time! She also found those curvy green tubes intriguing and kept wondering who was talking to her from the other end and how sound was able to come out of it.

Before getting our doughnuts, we stopped by Hobbes and Landes. I should change it's name... we will now call it Little Missy's Heaven. We've brought her to a toy store before, but here, since they were allowed to play with lots of toys, she was really excited! She was first interested in the Architecto blocks, then headed off to the play area. She was also very curios about the miniature displays and the circus.









After an hour of being side-tracked, we finally got our doughnut. Daddy had a little surprise for the little one. She had a Halloween pumpkin doughnut! I didn't get to take a pic before she devoured it so credits to the Krispy Kreme website for the photo below.

Her 2-year shot

Last Saturday, we went to my little missy's Pediatrician for her 24-month or 2-year old checkup. I wasn't able to take her in for 9 or 10 months, ever since he scheduled an MMR (Measles, Mumps and Rubella or German Measles) vaccine. I was really hesitant about that shot because in a site that I was a member of, the other moms were hinting that that particular shot may have a connection with autism.

Anyway, it was originally scheduled on her 15th month but I decided to let the 24month pass. Based on what I've read, and consultations with other Pediatricians, they said that autism usually manifests at around 16months to 22 months. One doctor that I liked even said that seeing my little missy's personality, she doesn't think that she may be a candidate for autism. It just wasn't her (my girl's) type. But still, she advised me to follow my heart when it comes to my child.

So alas, 24months came and I scheduled a visit to the Pediatrician. I surely didn't miss going to the doctor! There were a lot of people waiting, lots of kids even, from newborns to well... kids. It was a good thing I brought along a couple of my little girl's toys and books to keep her entertained. But of course, if you had to wait an hour or so, those books and toys were no match for impatience. Good thing was, she enjoyed seeing the nurses go back and forth from the nurses' station to the doctor's office (to hand new patient files). Why was she entertained? Because of their scrub suits.

I'm so glad that Pedia nurses wear child-friendly scrub suits. Gone were the times when nurses just wore plain white nursing scrub tops that weren't soft enough. Now all you'd see are mostly cartoon characters on pastel colored soft cotton scrubs. Sometimes, I am tempted to ask where I can buy those unique scrubs! If it can grab my girl's attention for an hour or so, I'm sure it would be a great help to me some time soon, after all, she is in her terrible twos now. Looking at them and guessing who the character was certainly made the time pass by quicker. Thank goodness for that.

We spent about 30 mins in the office, I asked a lot of questions about what to expect. But most of the time, the doctor just played with her. He made animal sounds that he wanted her to guess. Funny thing was, he ran out of animals and my little girl was the one calling out the names for him to make the sound! At the end of the visit, the doctor didn't give her the MMR vaccine. He gave her a shot of Hep-A first. He said it would be better since that was the shot originally scheduled for 24months. Her MMR will be on the day before Halloween!!!

You think it's a good idea to bring her to the doctor in her Halloween costume? Trick or Treat then get a shot! :D

At the end of the birth-day

So we had our trip to the zoo on her birthday. Of course we couldn't let the day end without her blowing some candles, right? A child has to do what a child has to do. So... Daddy had a cake delivered!

Because he knew she absolutely loved chocolates, he chose the Red Ribbon Chocolate Heaven Cake. I love chocolate too so let's see how it fares.

Birthday trip to the Zoo

We decided to surprise Little Missy on her birthday by going on her first ever trip to the zoo. She had received a free day pass as a complimentary gift from an Easter event we attended months ago. When we got to the Ark Avilon Zoo in Pasig, we saw that children's fees were at Php200 ($5USD) and adults were charged at Php350 ($9USD). We decided to buy her a ticket and use the free pass for an adult ;) We saved Php150, hehe.

The Zoo itself was clean and well-maintained. I was so ready to see a lot of mess, I had wipes and bottleS of ethyl alcohol ready, but was surprised that it was okay. Not one of those reported to have umm... unwanted objects everywhere. The staff who were in charge of the domesticated/trained animals too were very courteous. If you look at the animals close enough, they would tell you if you can or can't touch it (like the eagles and bearcat).

The only drawback for me was visiting on a Friday. There were 8 buses of students on a field trip. I guess I should have expected that. Fridays were usually when kids had their P.E. (Phys. Ed.) classes and they come to school in jogging pants - very convenient if you're having a field trip. But all in all, it was a great experience.

As soon as we went in, even before buying the tickets, I think she loved it already! We weren't technically inside yet but she was running and wailing all over the place. The entrance had these garden sticks with animals at the top and she played with all of them (see in slideshow below). There were also a rabbit and a guinea pig pen and since she's familiar with them (Rabbit from her Peter Cottontail book, and Peanut the guinea pig from a DVD), she kept shouting "Hop! Hop! Hop!" and started calling the guinea pigs Peanut.

Countdown to 2

In 3 days, at exactly 6:36pm, my little girl will be 2 years old.

I still remember years ago, when we had a hard time conceiving. We tried a lot of different things just to have a child, and when we gave up, God gave us His precious gift. This is when I really felt in my heart that he chose the right time.

The very first thing we decided to buy was her playard. Although I knew she would be a girl, I still wanted something neutral so we opted for something in denim and brown. I love it as soon as I saw it. Then the salesperson said they had a bassinet stroller of the same color, plus an attachment for a car seat. We thought about it for days but had it reserved. It broke our wallet but it was worth it. We used the detachable bassinet until she was comfortable lifting her head, the carseat doubled as her high chair and the stroller, we still use until now.

This was the most memorable "shopping spree" I had before having a baby. All I felt was contentment, excitement and anticipation. But months after she was born, the same stroller was used to wheel her into her Pediatrician's office. It was for her ear piercing.

A lot of people told me to not have her ears pierced, to just let her decide when she comes of age. Personally, I would have liked that. But as someone who had her ears pierced as a baby, I had second thoughts. I can't thank my parents enough for having my ears pierced when I was only months old. It probably really hurt, but I was too young to remember so I have never been traumatized by needles. This was what led me to decide to have her ears pierced at 5 months. She actually took it pretty well. She just cried when the doctor held her lobes but when he let go, she only cried for a couple of seconds.

Sadly, those earrings got lost when she was about 14 months old. We had to buy her another set but that didn't go too well. We thought she could handle the regular ones but the ends were too sharp and she kept scratching. To this day, she still wears those baby screw back earrings type. Come to think of it, I should buy her a new one... as a birthday gift.

But, she has more on her mind nowadays than earrings. She has been particularly fond of animals, especially monkeys. I guess it might be because of her Curious George books. She just loves him! It's actually why we've been buying her monkey baby clothes since before she turned 1. And, as a treat to her, we might take her to the zoo on Friday. We thought it's high time for her to see a real monkey. I really hope our trip to the zoo pushes through. If it does, I'll let you know what happens to her... and the monkeys.

Oh well... thanks so much for reading. Thanks for sharing with me my fondest memories of her "baby-hood". Once she turns 2, I'm pretty sure time will fly even faster... and yes, I know about the Terrible Two stage. I say, bring it on!

Wishing you love forever

Last Saturday, we attended a wedding. The groom, Will, is a friend of 5 years, but one that I've never met. He's from Canada and I met him online through chat.

I was so elated to know that he finally found the perfect woman in Myla (a beautiful, wonderful, generous Filipina) last year and that they got married in Canada last December. Since they still wanted to celebrate their love here in the Philippines, they again planned for another wedding.

Since his parents couldn't come, another friend from chat stood as his acting parents. Like Will, I also met Sue, from Australia, in the same chatroom. Since then, all three of us have been chatting on and off. I was so glad that they came over to the Philippines. I finally met 2 of my closest online friends.

Anyhow, the wedding was beautiful. During the ceremony, I felt... the love. One can see the love between Will and Myla, literally. The air was fresh, amidst the heat and humidity, because it seemed like it was just the 2 of them. Although there were bridesmaids, photographers, the pastor, etc., they only had eyes for each other and whatever it was that was left unsaid, we understood by how they looked at each other. Their smiles were heartfelt, their eyes twinkling the whole time. They just seemed so happy, so in love.


Will and Mai, I wish you all the happiness and love in the world. May you continue to stay in love, forever and ever. I know you can't live with love alone, but with love, you make each other stronger to live through everything that life throws at you.

... and Will, I appreciate you saying, during the photo op, that your family, means my family (which is why you had my hubby and little girl called). I know you know by now how family means so much to as Fils, so I sincerely appreciate the gesture.


To Ross and Sue, I meant what I said that your marriage is something to be envied. I will forever remember you two. I will forever hope that my marriage will be as happy as yours. Thank you for showing me that smiling hearts and twinkling eyes are not only for the day of the wedding.. but until forever after. P.S. Sue, my little girl demands her own bouquet! She's been asking since that night lol :P

A question about Anniversaries

My Mama and Tatang (mother and father) would've been married today for 35 years... that is if he were still alive. It makes me think though - Should anniversaries still be celebrated or should you at least greet the surviving spouse if the other has passed on?

My mom thinks so. Her way of thinking is that, this is still a special day for her. She was married to a wonderful man on this day years ago and she will always have wonderful memories between her and my father.

I think it's really, really sweet of her to think of it that way. Thank you Lord for giving me such perfect parents.

All hyped up

June 30th. Today is the inauguration of President-elect Noynoy Aquino. It's a special holiday. People are anxious to watch the events as there are lots of celebrities in his cabinet as well as the appearance of all his celebrity endorsers (thanks to sister Kris).

Are you as hyped up about this as with the rest of the Filipino nation? I'm not. I am not, and never have been a Noynoy fan. I loved his mother and father but I believe, that's all it was. He won by the merits of his parents. He has yet to prove himself. But since he won, I will support him as the country's new president. I very much want to know what he can do in his 100 days (if not to debunk everything ex-President Arroyo did). Don't take me wrong, I'm not an Arroyo fan either, but why dwell on her mistakes instead of trying to build up the country now, kwim??

Good luck Philippines. May you live well for the next 6 years for my daughter's sake.
